Himachal is home to several Devi temples, so it is obvious for the state to rank high when it comes to celebrating the holy nine nights of the Goddess. Navratri celebrations in HP start when the rest of India comes close to winding up the worship. At the Dhalpur Maidan in Kully Valley, Lord Raghunath (Rama) is ritually worshipped along with other deities throughout the nine-day-long fest. The tenth day of the festival is called Kullu Dussehra.

The festival drawn close with the burning of a piece of wood and grass on the banks of Beas River, thus signifying the destruction of Lanka in the Ramayana.

Navratri means ‘nine nights’ symbolizing purity and power fills every one with utmost ‘shakti’ to live the life to fullest. People do ritualistic puja and fasting for nine consecutive days and nights. It follows the lunar calendar. Chanting of mantras and singing of bhajans and folk songs accompany the rituals for nine days. One of the important rituals in Navratri is the worshipping of little girls. They represent Goddess Durga and are known as ‘kanjaks.’ It is mainly performed on the eight day or Ashtami.

Feeling of faith towards the mother Goddess almighty is in the air all over. All the temples are beautifully decorated. So is a treat for the eyes of the visitors as well.
